Top tips to uplift your mood through diet!

Updated: Mar 17, 2023

Sometimes we choose foods that aren't nourishing to our body and the thing is, we absolutely know that we're making these choices! However, it is extremely important to get to the point where we are so in touch with our body that we actively feel and understand how what we eat affects our mood, emotions and body.

You may be a beginner on this journey to health, which means that you just need a little nudge in the right direction!

Consume more fruits and vegetables of different colours, varieties and sizes! Various fruits and vegetables contain powerful compounds called phytonutrients which can act as anti-oxidants and possess anti-inflammatory properties. Eating more fresh fruits and veg will add more fibre to your diet, enrich your body with nutrients, encourage healthy digestive function, which in turn will affect your mood, positively.

Be adventurous and actively seek out exotic fruits that you may have never tried before! Have you heard of rambutan or snake fruit? Or how about custard apple which enjoyed throughout the Caribbean?

Trying something new whether it be food or an activity is courageous and something to be proud of! You'll have the health benefits of the food and your mood will be improved due to discovering something new!

Swap processed foods for foods that grow straight from mother earth!

What exactly is processed food? Any food that has been changed from its original form and processed into something else. For example, wheat is a grain which is grown in abundance, once harvested it is processed and made into flour. It undergoes another process and is finally turned into bread, pasta or pastries. Does that mean ditching bread, pasta and pastries? Yes, however this doesn't mean going cold turkey!

You can limit the amount of processed foods you usually eat and opt for grains or tubers; rice, quinoa, freekah, potatoes, yams or edoes are all wonderful natural alternatives to breads and pastas.

Boost up that gut bacteria! Taking a probiotic, unpasteurised yogurt drink or a kombucha is only good for your gut right? Wrong! The health of your gut is inter-related to the health of all systems of your body, which also have an effect on your mind! Increasing gut bacteria has been shown to boost mood in a positive manner! Aim to take a daily probiotic or prebiotic to increase that healthy gut bacteria!
